More Than a Fire Pit: A Piece of Art, Even Without the Flame
A fire pit earns its place on a cold evening. It brings warmth, draws people together and gives us a reason to stay outside a little longer.
But what about during the day, when the fire isn’t burning?
At Wimlah, that question is shaping a new design we’re working on. We want to create a fire pit that you enjoy looking at just as much as you enjoy sitting around. Something that feels at home in the garden, with or without a flame.
A functional piece that could also stand on its own as art.
Design that matters before you strike a match
We put thought into the plants, furniture and materials we choose for our outdoor spaces. A fire pit deserves that same attention.
Its shape can give the eye somewhere to settle. Its proportions can complement the landscape. The way sunlight catches an edge or a shadow falls through an opening can make it interesting throughout the day.
Imagine looking out from your kitchen window and seeing a sculptural piece among the greenery. Then, as evening settles in, that same piece becomes the place everyone gathers.
That’s the possibility we’re exploring.
Inspired by the place we call home
Here in the Blue Mountains, there’s plenty to draw from: sandstone cliffs, the curves of gum leaves, dark tree trunks and the changing light across the escarpment.
We’re interested in how those surroundings can influence the things we make. A curve, an outline or the balance between solid material and open space can help an object feel like it belongs in its setting.
For a fire pit, that means thinking beyond how it looks in a product photo. How does it sit beside stone paving? Against a backdrop of trees? What does it look like from across the yard?
Beauty has to work
Calling something a piece of art doesn’t excuse poor function.
A fire pit still needs to do its job. Stability, heat, airflow, cleaning and everyday use all need to be considered alongside its appearance. A beautiful shape is only the beginning; the design has to prove itself in use.
That’s the challenge we’re taking on: bringing practical fire design and sculptural form together, with both given the attention they deserve.
Something new is taking shape
Our new fire pit is still in development. We’re exploring what it could become, and we’ll share the design as it progresses.
The ambition is simple: to make something worth having in your outdoor space all day, all year—not only on the nights you light it.
A place to gather. A shape that catches your eye. A piece you choose because of how it makes your garden feel.
That’s what “more than a fire pit” means to us.
